John E. Hughes, Ed.D, EA. age 86, died peacefully on Monday, July 30, 2018 in Pathways, a caring and loving community at the Philadelphia Protestant Home in Philadelphia. From his birth in Philadelphia to his death on Monday he was a kind and caring son, nephew and friend. John was adopted by Elizabeth Hughes, MD, and lived with his grandmother, mother and aunt Alice through most of his life. John graduated from LaSalle High School and LaSalle College and became a Teacher. He later earned his Doctoral degree from Temple University. John enjoyed a sideline career from H & R Block and became an enrolled agent. John became a Principal in the Marple Newtown School District retiring after many successful years.
John loved to travel making friends everywhere he went in life. Easy going, always ready with a story John was inquisitive, knowledgeable and would share both with those around him. John blessed many people in his life including his special family and friends - the Froggatt's, Day's and Toland's and his many friends - Ellen, Pat, Karin, Helen, the Chicoteague boys - Steve, Ed, Gene and the late John.
He was predeceased by his mother , Elizabeth Hughes, MD, and aunt Alice Hughes. He is survived by his closest friends, Nancy Froggatt Toland, Ellen Dukes, Karin Crowley, Helen Ricker and Pat Crawford.
Funeral Service will be held at the Philadelphia Protestant Home on Friday August 3, 2018. The Viewing will be 9:45 - 10:45 AM with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 AM.
Rite of Committal Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
John's friends are extremely grateful for the loving care he received from the third floor Angels of Mercy at Philadelphia Protestant Home and Holy Redeemer Hospice caregivers. They truly made the end of John's life a blessing.
