Charles E. Monahan

Charles E. Monahan

Charles E. Monahan, 91, resident of the Holy Redeemer Lafayette retirement community, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2022.

Charles was the beloved husband of (late) Madelyn Y. Monahan (nee Malvestuto) and devoted father of Kathleen Monahan (Richard Terzian), Patricia Deane (Bart), Deborah Dziedzina (George) and Donna Deiss (Rick). He was also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Early on in his life, Charlie decided to apply for a ham operator license and became forever branded as K3VBA, connecting with the world. He spent many days on the road driving an 18-wheeler until he retired. Always up for the latest technology, he purchased the necessary equipment and went from still imaging to digital in no time. He engaged in an online card league under the alias of Miller Monahan and formed new friendships across the country, bonding over their mutual passion of playing hearts.

He would spend hours putting puzzles together with each one more challenging than the last. He found country music soothing, especially Johnny Cash, and listened to his songs whenever Alexa would listen to him. He enjoyed having his family together every year at the Shawnee Village where much laughter was shared and many fond memories forged.

His family was his pride and joy. He looked forward to family celebrations and would never turn down an offer of a Guinness. There may have been occasions where family took second fiddle to one of his many “best friends,” Buddy being the last.

Seriously though, the love of his life was Madelyn. He stayed strong as her caretaker and remained loyal while Alzheimer’s disease robbed her of her memory and stole her from him.

He was humbled by his recent recognition by the AOH Division 39 for his dedication and commitment to the United States of America by serving in three branches of the Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Marines.

He was as entertaining as he was generous. If you have ever crossed paths with him, you walked away with some essence of his character. And he was really quite the character.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at St. Dominic Church, 8504 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19136 from 9-10 a.m. A mass of Christian burial will take place starting at 10 a.m.; interment to follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his favorite charityASPCA | American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in his name.
