John was predeceased by his wife Mary Ottey (nee Hawryshko), survived by his children Michelle Ottey (Christy Santos) and John D. Ottey, and his sister Carole Dombrowski (Mark Dombrowski).

Private services will be held for immediate family. John will be interred at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War, like many others his experience shaped his entire adult life and affected him deeply.
