Cathryn McElvaney (nee Carman), born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 2, 2021, peacefully and surrounded by family.
Cathy was the beloved wife of Gary for the past 39 years. She was the loving mother of Brian, Kevin (Megan), and Mary Kate (Patrick), and proud grandmother to Brie, Maura, and Addison. She is also survived by her mother Kathryn, brother Joseph (Linda), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members, and predeceased by her father Joe and stepfather Larry.
Cathy was a proud retiree of the City of Philadelphia. She worked as a crossing guard for 35 years, almost entirely on the corner of Cottman and Roland Ave., before she retired in 2012. Cathy was also a devoted animal lover, proud St. Hubert’s alumna, a huge fan of The Beatles and the Philadelphia Eagles, and was rather infamous for her beautiful holiday decorating and love of over-the-top celebrations. She was incredibly devoted to her family and friends and was a fierce defender of those whom she loved. She was always ready to lend her experience and advice to those who needed it, which helped earn her the much-loved nickname “Chatty Cathy.” She will be incredibly missed, and her memory will live on in our hearts forever. We love you, Mom.
