JOSEPH A. LIRIO "JOE"
of Mayfair passed away on Friday, December 6, 2019 at Paul's Run at the age of 93. Beloved husband of the late Thelma Lirio (nee Schlosser). Devoted father of Claire Guidas, Diane Lirio and Marie Cummings (Daniel). Loving grandpa of Paul, Andy and Joe Guidas and Daniel Cummings. Dear brother of Jack Lirio, Rosalie Strang (the late Rod) and the late Marjorie McElroy (the late Albert).
Joe was one of the oldest surviving Lirios born and raised in Vineland, New Jersey where he attended Vineland High School, graduating at the age of 16. He then started his studies at Bucknell University until they were interrupted by World War II. After the war Joe returned to Bucknell University, graduating with a degree in Biology. Joe then began his working career at Rohm and Haas Chemical Company in Philadelphia, where he remained until retirement.
Joe met the love of his life, Thelma Schlosser, in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. They were married in 1954 and had three girls. Unfortunately, Thelma died at a young age leaving Joe to raise three small children. He was always proud that all three of his girls graduated from college.
After retiring at the age of 60, Joe became very involved with the Philadelphia- based Batona Hiking Club. He was an active member of the club for over 30 years, hiking and leading hikes in the local area on the weekends. More distant hikes he did with the group included the Grand Canyon and extensive parts of the Appalachian Trail.
Joe was lucky in life to meet Judy who provided him with companionship for 16 years. After that, he met Yolanda who quickly became the second love of his life. Unfortunately, she died a little more than five years after they met.
In all, Joe enjoyed a healthy and active 93 years of life right up until a serious fall the week before his death. He will be missed by family and friends.
