Margaret A. Smith

Margaret A. Smith

Margaret A. Smith (nee Higgins), 69, passed away suddenly on Tuesday April 20, 2021.

Margaret was the beloved wife of Kenneth Smith, Sr. for 49 years. Loving mother of Kenneth, Jr. (Lori), Daniel (Shannon), and Julia Monaco (Gary). She was a proud Nan of her 6 grandchildren Emma and Charlotte Smith; Avery and Amelia Smith; Cole and Mason Monaco. Margaret was a caring sister to  (late) Francis Higgins, Jr. (Barbara), Joseph Higgins, Matthew Higgins (Terri), and (late) Bertha Higgins.

Margaret was a kind and selfless soul who was devoted to her faith and family.  Margaret grew up in Kensington in Visitation parish.  At the age of 15 she met her soul mate and future husband Ken.  Margaret graduated from Little Flower Catholic High School in 1969 and married Ken three years later.  Their marriage brought them three children and later, six grandchildren with whom they absolutely cherished.  Margaret was the ultimate role model of a wife, mother, and nanny.  She was an angel on earth, a daily church goer, and a volunteer who helped the sick and fed the poor.  She served as a volunteer for organizations such as Pro Life, Aid for Friends, Our Ladies of the Missionary of the Eucharist, and many more local charities.

Margaret spent 15 years as a crossing guard in Juniata Park and was loved by all.  It was in her nature to guide people, to keep them safe, and to protect them.  After she retired from being a crossing guard, her love for helping others continued as she became a Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA) and started working at Immaculate Mary Home helping those in need.  After retiring from being a CNA, Margaret continued to volunteer there to give out communion, take patients to and from the chapel, and assist with feeding those who couldn’t.  Margaret loved spending her free time at her cozy shore place at Holly Lake.  She absolutely loved the beach.  She cherished it, the warm summer sun, the soft sand in her feet, and the wind in her hair.  She was beautiful.  Nanny was her most beloved role.  She adored all of her grandchildren and they loved her so much in return.  Margaret was the most incredible wife, mother, nanny, aunt, cousin, and friend that anyone could ask for.  Her kindness and good heartedness was palpable.  Her family would like to celebrate her wonderful life and ask everyone to pay it forward by performing small acts of kindness in her name and #doit4maggie.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing for Margaret A. Smith on Wednesday April 28, 2021 at Holy Innocents Catholic Church 1337 E. Hunting Park Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19124 from 9:15-10:15am. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30am. Interment to follow at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in Margaret’s name to: The Interstitial Lung Disease Fund at Giving to Penn (
