John N. Fafalios

I, Nick Fafalios write this in loving memory of my Father, John N. Fafalios born in 1931, who passed away at age 89 on April 15th, 2020.

My father, the Son of Nick and Athina Fafalios, was born in a small village on the island Xios, Greece. He lived with his Mother and younger Brother Jim and they endured the grim times and suffered many sacrifices during the 2nd World War. Due to the grueling conditions imposed by the war, my father was brought to Philadelphia, PA by his Grandfather, “Big” Nick Costalas, circa 1945.

He worked alongside family members in the family luncheonette. He then continued to work in and grow the family business into some seven various locations in the North Philly area, where he would manage the daily operations.

Thomas J. Day Sr.

Thomas J. Day, Sr   (1933-2020)

Retired Philadelphia Fireman and Fireboat Pilot Thomas Day, 87, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, 11 April 2020. 

A native of Brookline, MA, he was a 1950 graduate of Brookline High School just outside of Boston, prior to entering the US Army and being deployed in Korea.  For extraordinary service there as an MP Staff Sargent, he was eventually awarded the Medal of Peace by the Republic of Korea. 

Sister Patricia Kelly, M.S.B.T.

Sister Patricia Kelly Missionary Servant of the Most Blessed Trinity, a native of Scranton PA died on April 13, 2020.

Burial will take place at Holy Sepluchre Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at some time in the future at Blessed Trinity Mother House Chapel to which family and friends will be invited.



William P. Christiansen

William P. Christiansen of Lexington Park on April 8, 2020 at the age of 93.

Beloved husband of the late Nancy M. (nee Wazalis). Devoted father of William J. (Lisa), Mark W. and Suzanne N. LeValley (Mike). Loving grandfather of Dana E .Livingston (Matt), Caroline M. and W. Daniel. Great grandfather of Benjamin and Blake Ellie.

Bill was the last child born to Philip and Emma (nee Gormley). His father emigrated from Copenhagen in the early 1900s and he married a daughter of former constable from Northern Ireland.

He was born in 1926 and was of the depression era generation. He went to old NorhEast High School on Lehigh Ave was drafted in WWII. After basic training he entered the European theater after D- Day; his experience involved campaigns to Central Europe in Czechoslovakia. At the war's end he returned to the states where he trained as a medic and received an Honorable Discharge in August of 1946 as a Technician Fifth Grade, Med Det 23rd INF 2nd Div from Fort Lewis in Washington. He was just five days shy of his 20th birthday.

Anna P. McDowell


Anna “Annie” P. McDowell (nee Dimitroff) passed away on April 8, 2020 at the age of 89.

Devoted mother of Ann Lepkowski (Stephen) and loving grandmother of Andrew, Lauren, Nicholas and Brian. Annie was the daughter of Greek immigrants, Elia and Domenika (Misiolidis) Dimitroff, dear sister of Mary, Nicholas (D), Dorothea, Catherine Heany (Richard (D)), and Deanna Sarkioglu (D) (John), and loving aunt/great-aunt to her nephew, nieces, and great nieces and nephews.

Elsie M. Sheets

Elsie Marie Sheets (neePagliei) On the evening of March 31, 2020, Elsie passed away, peacefully, of natural causes. Elsie was comforted by her family members at Brandywine Dresher Estates in Dresher, PA. She was 98 years young.

Beloved wife of the late Everett Osborne Sheets M.D. Devoted mother of Deborah Shaffer (Ron), Raymond Sheets (Mary), Michele Pettinelli (Frank) and Lisa Sheets. Loving grand mother of Vanessa Paddock (Joe), Lauren Sheets (Adam), Brielle Pettinelli, Jonathan Shaffer, Andrew Pettinelli and Christian Pettinelli. Treasured great grand mom of Genevieve, Joey, Lachlan and Luke.

Elsie was born and raised in the Tacony section of Philadelphia. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants, Luigi and Michelina (Gagliardi) Pagliei. She had four brothers, Joseph (D), Vincent (D), Frank, age 96, of San Antonio, Texas and Louis (D). Elsie attended Our Lady of Consolation elementary school and Hallahan High School. She worked as an Administrative Assistant in center city, Philadelphia until she met the love of her life, Ossie, a medical resident at Hahnemann hospital. They were married in 1948 and later moved to Ossie’s hometown, Beaver Falls, PA where he practiced medicine beside his father. After Ossie’s return from The Korean War, the couple settled in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia where they lived, worked, and raised their family as members of the St. Matthew Church parish community for 47 years.

Mary Hubbard

Mary Hubbard, 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2020 at her Philadelphia home surrounded by her loving sister and loving nephew and nieces.

She was born on June 18, 1943 in Camden, NJ. She was the second twin daughter of Kennard Norman Hubbard and Cordelia Martin Hubbard. She graduated from Faith Tabernacle School and then attended Camden County Vocational where she took up sewing. After finishing the course, she was employed in Berlin, NJ where she did embroidering. She also worked for Avery Soabar Company in Philadelphia and Marshall’s retail before cleaning at Faith Tabernacle Church.

James J. Smart

James J. Smart of Mayfair passed away peacefully on April 3, 2020 at home with family. He was 93. 

Loving husband of 63 years to Marie E. Smart who passed just 3 weeks ago at age 87. Devoted father of James J. Jr. (Maryanne), William (Stacey), Maureen Crosby (James), Rita Marinari (Dominic), and Carol Schwab (Ryan). Loving grandfather of Anne Marie Kauler (Eric), Theresa Velasquez (Marty), Joseph Smart (Larissa), Catherine Hill (Jon), Marybeth Buesching (Juergen), J. Christopher Smart, Jennifer Smart, Lauren Smart, Kelly Delisi (Derek), Patricia Czyzewski (Korye), James Crosby, Katherine Ogin (Mat), Christina Marinari, Dominic Marinari, Erin Schwab, Alyssa Schwab and Ryan Schwab; great grandfather of 15. Loving brother to Nancy Chamberlain, the late Rita Waters, and the late William Smart.

Jim was good man, strong, proud, kind, honest, a true salt of the earth kind of guy. He was born March 23, 1927 to Mary and James Smart. He spent his early years in West Philadelphia where he helped care for is younger brother Bill, two sisters Rita and Nancy and cousin Joe who came to live with them at an early age. He attended and received his diploma in 1945 from St Thomas More HS (“St. Tommy forever More” were words that Jim spoke often) He enlisted in the US Navy in May 1945, during World War II.     He was honorably discharged in August 1946 and returned home to West Philadelphia where he took advantage of the GI bill, enrolled in a 2 year program and attended   St Joseph’s University to continue his education.

Betty Alcaro

Betty Alcaro (nee Lewis) passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at the Vitas Hospice at Nazareth Hospital after a long illness at the age of 72. 

Beloved wfie of Rocco Alcaro. Devoted mother of John Griffith (Gina) and Kelly Adair. Loving grandmom of  Samantha Johnny, Danielle and Joe.

A Memorial Gathering and Funeral Mass will be held at a later date.

Roger A. Dugan

ROGER A. DUGAN (ROD) 100 yrs young – recently of Lady Lake FL – passed away Thursday March 26, 2020 at home surrounded by loved ones. This was just 3 weeks after suffering his only heart attack. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather.

Born November 19, 1919 in Philadelphia PA. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel F Dugan and Elizabeth A (nee Rossiter), three brothers Daniel, Bernard and John and 2 sisters Madeline and Martha.

As a young adult, because of his love for roller skating, he was often found at the local rink which at that time was Chez Vous near 69th St.

Being classified as 4F for military service, due to a severe sinus condition, he was sent to Arizona and spent approximately 10 years in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area where his only child Ruth Ann Dugan Barlow was born.
